Hey everyone!
I hope you’re doing well and looking forward to the holiday season! It’s a great time to reflect on how to stay balanced and prioritize what makes you feel good.
Doesn’t it seem like there's a new health trend every week? There’s always someone telling you what and when you should (or shouldn’t) eat, the ideal workouts to do, or the latest ways to care for your mind and body. Trying to keep up with these trends can feel overwhelming, and it’s easy to get lost in all the advice.
Your Body Isn’t a Trend
The key word here is trend—but your body isn’t a trend. It’s yours for life, and while it may change over time, it has unique needs that can’t be met with a “one-size-fits-all” approach. The core of wellness is respecting the individual: learning and honoring your own body’s signals and needs. It’s not about following a cookie-cutter approach; it’s about creating a personalized health recipe.
Now, that might sound like a lot of work, but in reality, it’s intuitive. All it takes is tuning into your body. Are you tired? Hungry? Feeling tense? All these signals are your body’s way of telling you what you need.
Why I Stopped Listening To Every Health Fad
I see this often with clients who start a program without noticing how it actually makes them feel. For example, I once tried intermittent fasting when it was all the rage. It seemed to work wonders for others, so I thought, why not? However, I soon realized it was affecting my hormones and energy. Like many women, fasting disrupted my cycle and left me feeling off-balance. I was trusting the trend more than my own body, and that was a mistake.
This is just one example of why it’s essential to listen to your own cues. No trend can work for everyone, and many aren’t sustainable. Think of it like a trendy dessert pop-up shop: everyone’s lining up for a couple of weeks, then it fades. Health fads are often the same way.
Proactively Getting the Most Out of Your Healthcare Team
I always remind clients that it’s essential to feel empowered to initiate asking questions about lifestyle, health trends, etc. and engage actively in their care. By tuning into your body and sharing what you notice with your healthcare providers, you create a collaborative approach that brings out the best in their expertise.
Melissa’s foot pain
Melissa suffered from chronic foot pain and was prescribed medication without understanding the source of her pain. Her daily habits, shoe choices, and other simple factors weren’t even considered. After working together and digging a bit deeper, we realized her insoles were causing compression and nerve pain. She felt heard, and the solution was surprisingly simple. She felt heard because she was able to express her concerns and describe accurately her discomfort. As a team, finding the solution was surprisingly simple.
Takeaway: Trust Yourself First. Listen to your body
The takeaway? You know your body best. Doctors and therapists are valuable resources, but they’re guides—not the ultimate authority on what’s right for you. Their advice is essential, but it’s just that—advice. When you feel in sync with your body and your care team, you’re setting yourself up for better health, quality of life and true fulfillment.Take charge by listening to your body and embracing the full support your practitioners can offer.
