Ever wondered why so many people think Pilates is just for women? It’s confusing, especially since men are embracing other wellness trends like Yoga. So why hasn’t Pilates made the cut?

Here’s a fun fact: Pilates was actually created by a man—Joseph Pilates, a professional boxer and self-defense instructor. During World War I, he developed the Pilates method to help rehabilitate injured soldiers and POWs, using his knowledge of bodybuilding, gymnastics, and physical therapy to create a system that strengthens the body from the inside out. He saw no difference between men and women when it came to who could benefit from the practice.

So, why are men missing out on Pilates? Let’s debunk some common misconceptions:  - They think it’s too easy, slow, or gentle.  - It’s seen as more appropriate for flexibility than for strength-building and muscle development.  - They believe only big, heavy moves build muscle.  - Some men think that doing Pilates will make them look weak or feel out of place.

Several other issues might be at play:

Men are often inclined to wait until something goes wrong before taking action, instead of preventing or avoiding injury.  And... if I’m being honest, it’s understandable that some men might feel a bit out of place in a room full of women in yoga pants.

But here’s the reality: Pilates is anything but easy. Yes, it can be slow, but it creates a deep, controlled burn that challenges your core strength, balance, and stabilizing muscles in ways traditional workouts can’t. In fact, it’s widely used in professional sports to boost performance, treat and prevent injuries, and improve posture. There’s no other exercise that targets your core quite like Pilates—and a strong core is the foundation of all physical activity, from weightlifting to running.

I personally use Pilates when I train high-performance male athletes to improve synchronized muscle activation, proper alignment, and strength while helping them recover from or avoid injuries. Trust me when I say- Pilates is never easy for them! They’re often surprised by how challenging it is!

The benefits? Better performance, quicker recovery, and a stronger, more resilient body.

It’s time to reshape the relationship between Pilates and masculinity. Those who push past that initial hesitation will discover a world of incredible benefits. That’s why online Pilates is the best way to start—no pressure, just you and the workout!

It’s important to note: I’m not trying to convert anyone to practicing Pilates exclusively. On the contrary. I always recommend continuing with your favorite sports or outdoor activities. Combining Pilates with your preferred form of exercise, whether it’s martial arts, hitting the gym, or playing soccer with your kids, is the best way to achieve a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Pilates is the perfect complement to whatever workout you love, helping you enhance your ability to keep doing it long-term.
