Hey everyone,
Many of my clients get caught up in what I call the "imaging trap." They see the results of their MRIs, X-rays, and ultrasounds as the ultimate diagnosis; a definitive explanation for how they feel. I see cases where people receive diagnoses based solely on abnormal findings like bulging discs, spinal narrowing, or degenerative changes. The problem is, sometimes, these patients aren't even asked about their specific experience with pain during the examination. The imaging explains what they have but not necessarily how they feel.
These imaging findings might not even indicate the root cause of pain. Seeing something "off" on a scan doesn't automatically mean it's causing your pain. Additionally, a diagnosis based on an image can even create new pain through the power of suggestion!
The truth is, that "bulging discs" and "degenerative disc disease" are very common. Many people with these findings experience no pain or dysfunction whatsoever. Research shows that nearly a third of healthy, pain-free 20-year-olds already have disc bulges! This number goes up with age, with 45-50-year-olds having a 40-50% chance of having a disc bulge, yet they are likely not experiencing pain. Similarly, abnormal MRI findings are highly likely in people over 60, but many of them have no pain at all.
So, can degenerative changes cause back pain? Absolutely. But finding one on an MRI doesn't guarantee it's the culprit. Unfortunately, this reliance on scans can lead to unnecessary procedures like back surgery or injections when the problem could be addressed with conservative care ( Physical Therapy, corrective exercise, manual therapy) versus medical intervention.
A normal scan doesn't invalidate your pain; discomfort is real even without a visible abnormality.
The bottom line: Your experience is what matters.
My MUV Therapy approach focuses on finding the true source of your pain. What is the nature of the pain? When and why did it begin? What movement patterns are contributing to the issue? Often, insufficient mobility and/or stability, poor posture, or incorrect technique when lifting or sitting for long hours can lead to excessive stress on your lower spine. All of the above can manifest as pain, stiffness, discomfort, etc.
Simply treating the pain doesn't address the underlying issue. That's why I focus on movement. I want to understand how your movement patterns contribute to these problems. Once I know that, I can help you to retrain your body, unleash your own strengths to move more efficiently and avoid the root causes of the pain or discomfort.
